What is an MRE? MRE is an abbreviation for Meal-Ready-to-Eat. The MRE is a shelf-stable, pre-cooked, packaged meal that is used by United States soldiers in the field. SOPAKCO Packaging is a producer of MREs and other types of military ration food items. There are twelve different meals in each case for 24 different menus , each containing approximately 1,200 calories. Each Case contains two different vegetarian menus. A full case weighs about 2 2 pounds. What about preservatives and how do they last? The product is packaged in special layered material to maintain freshness for a long period of time. Of course, SOPAKCO Packaging cannot guarantee an absolute shelf-life for its product because shelf-life depends on food components and temperature conditions. The average shelf-life is about 3-years. The table above references sustained temperatures. MREs are not usually stored in climate controlled or air-conditioned facilities for long periods of time and product nutritional value and shelf-life may be compromised if an average temperature is not maintained. MREs should not be stored at temperatures of 25° - 30° F due to possible reduction in quality. Frozen storage is not recommended.

Each Sure-Pak 12 Meal case contains 12 individual meal kits—two each of six menus— including vegetarian options. Each meal kit contains an entree, side dish, dessert item, cracker or wheat bread and spread, beverage powder, and a condiment pack with a spoon, napkin, wet nap, salt, pepper, coffee, creamer and sugar.
